Learning from the Ikat Weavers: Why It Matters
The Ikat Weaving Tradition is Slowly Fading
The ancient Ikat weaving tradition plays a significant role in Balinese history. The village of Pejeng Kangin in particular is known for intricate craftmanship in the ancient weaving method.
The craft of Ikat weaving was almost lost when younger generations of Balinese villagers chose to venture to the city, leaving no one in these villages behind to learn the craft and carry on the tradition. As the COVID-19 pandemic hit, employment creation became a priority. Through the guidance of a small group of talented master weavers, word got out that they would impart their knowledge and skills to others. Soon, more villagers picked up Ikat weaving to sustain their livelihoods.
Learning from the Ikat Weavers: The Experience
Support the Ikat Tradition of the Local Weaving Community
In partnership with The Togetherness Project, a local NGO, the Sheraton Bali Kuta Resort invites guests on a hands-on, educational experience to learn from the local weaving community and keep the Ikat tradition alive.
Guests will visit Pesalakan, a small traditional village spearheading the revitalization of Ikat weaving. Once they arrive at the Banjar (local village council) pavilion, they will learn about the history of Ikat weaving from locals, followed by an opportunity to learn how to use the looms from expert weavers.

Keeping Traditional Balinese Traditions Alive
By joining this experience, guests will help keep the tradition of Ikat weaving alive while contributing to the local economy and learning about the untold story of the village’s artisanal craft.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, The Togetherness Project identified employment creation as a key priority in Pesalakan Village. Guests who choose to purchase their own Ikat products after the experience will be supporting the weaver community, their family, and the village’s Koperasi (cooperatives). Sheraton Bali Kuta Resort will also donate 100% of the proceeds from the experience to The Togetherness Project.
Guests’ participation will also help bring back the tradition of Ikat weaving and keep the art form alive. Since the program started, Pejeng Kangin has re-established its Ikat cottage industry and weaving has become increasingly popular. Today, there are 25 women weaving and producing these beautiful pieces of Ikats.
